Academics/Pool

Spring 2010 Divemaster Class

Academics:

Text 1: Divemaster Manual - Chapters 1 - 9
Text 2: Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving + Workbook

Other Texts: Open Water, Advanced, Rescue manual

Bring the relevant text (s) to each review/exam evening, along with a pencil/pen etc... We will typically talk through the chapter/content briefly to highlight key points, then you will take the exam. All the exams, except for the Divemaster Conducted programs exam, are closed book. There are 20 questions, and you need a 75% or higher to pass.

There are 8 exams: Supervising Students, Supervising Certified Divers, Divemaster Conducted Programs, Physics, Equipment, Physiology, Dive Skills and Environment, & Decompression Theory and the RDP

May 4th Tues (6:00pm) Academics – Intro to Role of the Divemaster + First 2 Exams

Read/complete before this date: Chapters 1 – 3 of the Divemaster manual + Knowledge reviews from end of chapters.

Exam 1 will cover material from Chapter 2, Exam 2 will cover material from Chapter 3

 

May 19th Wed (6:00pm) Academics  - Divemaster Conducted Programs Briefing + Exam

Read/complete before this date: Chapters 6, 7, 8, 9 of the Divemaster manual + Knowledge reviews from end of chapters.

Prepare before this date: A short (5-6 minutes at most) dive site briefing for any local dive site. You (the Divemaster) are staying on shore and people are diving in individual buddy teams. See pages 43 – 45 of the DM manual for the points you might include.

Exam is 'open book' with the instructor manual

 

May 26th Wed (6:00pm) - Academics and Pool Physics practice + Skills circuit + Equipment Exchange

We will be talking through some of the Physics concepts and practicing some of the math to give everyone a solid foundation to be able to ace the Physics test.

Read/complete before this date: Chapter 4 DM manual (only 4 pages), skim Physics section of Encyclopedia and work through as much of work book section on Physics as possible.

Physics Exam + Swims

Pool Notes: We are also getting in the pool this evening, so expect to be with us until ~10:30pm.

You will need snorkeling gear + full scuba – we have tanks you can use. The pool is warm, I would recommend not bringing a thick wetsuit. We will be doing the skills listed on the right half of page 195 in the DM manual.

 

June 7th Mon (6:00pm) - Academics and Pool – Physics Exam + Swims

Read/complete before this date: All of Workbook Physics section + Physics section + Physics practice exam version H

Pool Notes: We are also getting in the pool this evening, so expect to be with us until ~10:30pm.

You will need snorkeling gear + full scuba – we have tanks you can use. The pool is warm, I would recommend not bringing a thick wetsuit. We will be doing the stamina assessment skills listed on the left side of Page 195 of the DM manual. There are 4 exercises, you must complete all 4. Each is scored on a 1 – 5 scale, you must get a combined 12 out of 20 possible points. The times/criteria for each score are listed in the instructor manual in the Divemaster section.

June 16th Wed (6:00pm) Academics – Physiology Exam

Read/complete before this date: Physiology section of Workbook/Encyclopedia


June 30th Wed (6:00pm) Academics – Equipment Exam & Dive Skills and Environment Exam

Read/complete before this date: Equipment + Dive Skills & Environment sections of Workbook/Encyclopedia

 
July 7th Wed (6:00pm) Academics  - Decompression Theory and the RDP

Read/complete before this date: Decompression Theory and the RDP section of Workbook/Enciclopedia, Chapter 5 of the DM manual + Knowledge Reviews from the end, practice using RDP + eRDPml.

Water Skills & Assessments

Internship

 DMCs need to join 1 pool training session, 4 weekends with Open Water classes, 1 other class (Drysuit, Advanced, Rescue etc...), & 1 Club Dive or boat trip. If there is space on the schedule, you are welcome to join more.

July 17 & 18 Advanced Open Water Class - 1 space available - must have done at least ten 80+' dives

July 24 & 25 Open Water Class - JP L. + 1 space available
 
July 31 + August 1 - Open Water Class - 2 spaces available
July 31 Boat Trip - 1 space maybe available
 
August 7 & 8 - Open Water class - JP L. + 1 space available
August 8 Drysuit class - 1 space available
